Abstract

In this work, the effect of a residual stress field having a compressive maximum away from the sample
surface on strength variability is studied by a fracture mechanics approach. The ultimate aim of the works
is the production of a surface flaw-insensitive glass. Peculiar features for a residual stress profile which
is able to stabilize surface defect propagation are furnished. Aluminosilicate glass bars were subjected to
a double ion-exchange treatment in KNO3 and NaNO3 in order to produce the desired stress profile.
Evident stable growth was observed for surface flaws and limited strength variability was measured by
four point bending tests.
