Creep crack initiation and growth in 12%Cr-steel turbine disks
Last modified: 2013-06-27
Abstract
In this paper a 12%Cr steel for turbine disk has been examined. CCG test on compact tension (CT)
specimens according to the recommendations of ASTM-E1457 have been carried out in order to obtain parameters
characterizing the creep crack initiation of the material, and to evaluate the proper fracture mechanics parameter which
defines the creep crack growth behaviour of the material. The results have been applied to study the occurrence of crack
initiation on a turbine disk made of the examined material, at the extreme stress level and temperature experienced in
service, and to validate the use of the C* integral in correlating creep growth rate on the component, both when C* is
numerically calculated through FEM analysis and reference stress solution.
