Abstract

In general, at the macroscopic scale the plastic strain in materials ishomogeneous. However, under certain conditions of temperature and strainrate, it can become heterogeneous. There is then localization of the plasticstrain. The dynamic strain aging (DSA) phenomenon which occurs in somematerial under certain temperature and strain rate can cause a localization ofthe plastic strain in the form of bands called bands of Portevin Le Chatelier(PLC). For a tensile test at imposed strain rate, they are associated on thetensile curve with repeated serrations resulting from a succession of stressdrops. In the case of test at imposed stress rate, the PLC bands arecharacterized by discontinuities in the form of levels of strain. Thislocalization of the plastic strain can appear in materials with different crystallattice (mild steels, austenitic stainless steels, aluminium alloys, zirconiumalloys…).
